Elisa Di Francisca, a 39-year-old Olympic champion and Rio silver medalist, has retired from fencing. A native of Iesi, Italy, Di Francisca was in top form at the 2012 London Olympics. She won gold in the individual foil event, becoming the second Italian woman to win an Olympic fencing gold medal.
Di Francisca added a silver medal to her collection at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she finished second in the individual foil event. She also won a bronze medal in the team foil event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and a silver medal in the team foil event at the 2012 London Olympics.
Di Francisca, who has been fencing since she was a child, is considered one of the greatest Italian fencers of all time. She has won 12 medals at the Olympics, World Championships, and European Championships. She is also the first Italian woman to win an Olympic gold medal in fencing.
