Cartilage Regeneration: A New Technique Uncovered in Austria
Breakthrough in Orthopedic Medicine
For years, researchers have been striving to develop effective methods for growing new cartilage. Cartilage regeneration is a highly sought-after goal in orthopedic medicine as it would offer new treatment options for conditions such as osteoarthritis, where the loss of cartilage leads to pain and immobility.
3D Printed Spheroid Structures: A Key Innovation
Scientists at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria) have recently developed a novel technique for growing cartilage tissue using 3D printed spheroid structures. These spheroids, composed of stem cells and a supporting scaffold, provide an optimal environment for cartilage formation.
In their research, the scientists seeded a type of stem cell known as chondrocytes onto the spheroids. Chondrocytes are the cells that produce cartilage. The spheroids were then cultured in a bioreactor, mimicking the conditions of the human body and allowing the cells to grow and differentiate into functional cartilage tissue.
